Help! Why is my zoom suddenly sticky/jerky?

Can anyone help out? I have the tamron 17-55 2.8 and have been using it about everyday. Suddenly tonight it is very jerky/sticky when I zoom back in, zooming out isn't as big of an issue. It is very bothersome and sticky enough that it makes zooming a hassle. I'm a bit panicky TBH because this is my best lens and I'm shooting my cousin's wedding (pro bono because there is no WAY they can afford a photographer.. they were getting a friend to do it w/ a point and shoot so dont' worry about them not knowing what they are getting LOL) in less than a month, and there is really no way I can replace this money wise in that amount of time.

I feel your pain, I just had a run in with a puddle and got extremely lucky.

I would send the lens in for service and borrow something similar for the time it's there.

15524779-Ti.gif - send it in for service and either borrow or rent a replacement for the wedding. No matter what you do, you need equipment in which you have confidence. There's too much else going on to be distracted by your equipment.

    Good luck with your lens.

update: Well, I decided to wait to send in the lens because the wedding is on the 27th of March and I was afraid I wouldn't have the lens back in time and I don't really have the money to rent a lens. Well, today it just stopped working. The lens will not zoom out or in at all it's just stuck. So, I guess I'm stuck sending it in and NEVER EVER buing a grey market lens again. EVER

Thankfully I do still have the 18-55 kit lens. Not what I would choose but if worse comes to worse I can use it. I've got a 50mm 1.8 as well so I can use that for lower light situations. I'll just pray it comes in on time I guess.

Definitely contact Tamron and let them know the situation. They may be able to provide a faster solution if they know everything before you send the lens in.

    Sorry to hear the news..

Just a thought, you might check out www.glassandgear.com and www.borrowglass.com . Their weekly rental prices are pretty good. Looks like most that you might be interested in are $45 - $55 for a week..

    Good luck!!

Ziggy is, of course, right. If you contact your repair facility they may be able to expedite the repair.

If that falls through, you need to beg or borrow something to augment the kit lens. I fear the kit lens will not be fast enough if the wedding/reception is indoors. In addition, I believe the kit lens has issues focusing in darker environs (though I could be wrong on that one).

The down-side of renting, for example, the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS is that, once you've used it, you'll want it. :D

Oh, and jww beat me to the punch about renting from glassandgear or borrowlenses . BTW - if you rent from borrowlenses and use the SMUGMUG5 coupon, you'll get a 5% discount on the rental (brings the 17-55 down to about $45 (+ s/h/i).

In my case it may be more like "hope you see what I mean.. just ignore some of what I type". mwink.gif
