I have the TC-80N3 for a 40D. I can't get an OEM extension cable locally. Might I find something generic at an electronics store that would have no risk? What should I be asking for?

Thanks.

I bout mine from ebay for $12 including shipping. It's not Canon, it comes from Hong Kong but it works fine.

I bought the same one and I'm so far quite happy with that as well. Seems to work very well indeed.

Related to extension cables, I'm pulling my hair out trying to find a DIY to extend the Canon flash extension cord. I saw a DIY article on the net once that involed using six-conductor Ethernet cable and connectors but I cannot find that anymore.

A quick google search (keywords: diy canon flash extension cord) got me these on the first page...

Two different ways to solve the problem. Neither one uses a CAT5 cable, but there's enough information there that you could easily substitute the CAT5 should you wish to (FWIW, I think these solutions would top anything using a CAT5 cable - but that's just me).
