Fellow DGrinners:
I've been working for a few months on a utility which will monitor selected directories and notify me of changes, deletions, etc. This has been in an effort to protect my backups from potential corruption of the original data. I'm calling this utility BitLegit, and I've decided to release it in the form of a public beta. More info on what BitLegit is...
(Mods, I posted here rather than the Hacks forum because this doesn't pertain explicitly to SmugMug. I understand if it needs to move, though.)

The public beta will run for at least one month, after which I'll either release another beta or release a full version. In the interest of complete disclosure, I'm planning to sell the final version for a small fee. If you're interested in trying it out, the beta is available here. Thanks!BitLegit site wrote:BitLegit is a Windows-based utility which aims to prevent corruption of your data. There are many excellent backup services and applications available (Mozy, SyncBack, Xdrive, to name a few), but most have one potentially fatal flaw. If your original data becomes corrupted, that corrupted data will eventually overwrite the good data you first backed up. BitLegit aims to prevent this problem.
BitLegit starts up when your computer boots and periodically creates fingerprints for all the files in the directories you specify. BitLegit then notifies you of changes to or deletion of those files, thus giving you time to intercede when necessary.
For example, say you have your family’s digital photos backed up with Mozy. One day, something bad happens to your data. (A hard disk sector goes bad. One of your kids deletes the root picture directory. A virus corrupts a few images. You get the idea.) BitLegit will detect the change and let you know that it occurred. In our example, Mozy keeps 30 days worth of history on changed and deleted files, allowing you to retrieve your good data and replace the corrupted files.
BitLegit’s primary purpose is to serve as a layer of protection on top of your backup.
