Who makes the best glass?

Is there an acknowledged leader or "best" when it comes to our lenses?
Or do some mfgs make a better short lens and someone else makes the best long lens?
Is this something that has been pretty much nailed down or is it an area of argument?
Basically I'm looking for who makesthe best brightest clearest long lens...

anybody have any opinions comments or ideas.....

I'm wandering a bit out of my depth, but I think the myth is that Canon's better know for their long glass, and Nikon for their short lenses.

In practice, neither you nor I could tell the difference. So it doesn't really matter.

Not if German is your native tongue. :D

The merits of lenses are better discussed for specific lenses rather than in broad sweeping statements, but Sid is correct that in the most general of ways Canon is better regarded for its long teles with IS, and Nikon is favored as producing more consistently really good wide angles. But when you talk about a specific lens it is not this easy. Zeiss is highly regarded also, but again you have to discuss a specific lens for a specific camera for a specific purpose.

Chose your system, Nikon, Canon, whatever and buy the best lenses you can. They will be with you a long time. When you are so good that you can see the difference between the very best from Canon and Nikon or Zeiss, then you will have arrived. Most of us are not anywhere near as good as our equipment is able.

    Thanks you guys!
I didn't know it but that's what I was after......I'll probably never know the difference.
My glass (L's, etc.) is good enough, I don't have to look further than the Canon line.
I thought Canon was the best when I switched, I just needed to hear it from y'all.
    Thanks

Nikon glass is the best. Just ask any NiKon user. Don't listen to the Canon users, they are biased. :D

And I'm definitely in the North. But I used to use Nikon film cameras and they were very good. Either Canon or Nikon glass used properly will make very acceptable images. So will the glass from Minolta or Pentax or Olympus. Most of them are all good. But the "L" stuff from Canon is even better :D

I know it Sid. Its quite similar to the Civil War except for the slavery issue. In this one I see Canon as the North with slave labor working for sub-standard wages churning out brain damaged Rebels to enslave unknowing consumers to their line of lenses. An evil empire to be brought down. We may be outnumbered but the Force is with us. :lol4

times have changed, I'm old enought (just) to remember Eisenhower as President, while on a state visit Prince what's his name from Japan was denied permission by the state department to shot the President with his new Canon camera. It would send the wrong message.
