just an opinion and remember it's only me --3 is the best 1 and 2 need a dif.crop or clone out the extras ,the stuff behind the bird you pick as your subject . 4 is good also but the tree behind does not help your shot

Thanks, I'm pretty new at this and really appreciate the tips. I will spend some time out in the blind today and see what I can come up with.
I really like all of them and I'm very jealous because I have the same camera and lens and haven't gotten anything close to looking like these. I think I'll look for a blind so I can get closer. My favorites are the chickadee and the nuthatch (at least that's what I think the last one is).
I like the last shots in each of the series the best. The light on the female Cardinal and the pose on the other.
I know that shooting with the 70-300 can be challenging when trying to capture birds. Getting the 300L F/4 IS and a 1.4 TC change my whole experience vastly. I held off because I was afraid that I would not be able to find my subjects quickly enough. In less than a day I had it figured out. Well worth the money without going overboard.

You can find blinds from Ameristep for under $100.00, if you combine the blind with lots of bird seed you can get pretty close:D
Thanks for the help, I had not thought of the tree passing right through the subject. I had been primarily concerned with getting a nice crisp focus.
Now if we could get some good sun light up in these parts.
