I think it is indeed a downy woodpecker, and a nice shot of one.

Agreed, pretty sure it's a downy. how big was it?

Good shot, those guys are always very hard to get around here. Like to hide where the backgrounds are not so nice. Unlike those egrets strutting around in the wide open marsh...

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Troy nice shot. If you want to see more woodpeckers just put the right seed out for them and they will never leave.

Very true. I use a mixture of oiled sunflower seeds and a blend of nuts and wild cherries and a special woodpecker block with nuts and sunflower seeds stuck together in a brick. I have both downy and red-breasted woodpeckers visiting on a daily basis.

BTW, it is a downy woodpecker. The one most often confused with a downy is the hairy woodpecker, but his beak is 2-3 times longer than the downy's.
