Cropping pictures before uploading

Hello, another newbie query

I don't really want my pictures to be cropped by purchasers. But if they must, then should I resize (without resampling) one edge of my picture in Photoshop to match or nearly match the same size edge of one of the common sizes in your printing catalog at http://wwww.smugmug.com/prints/catalog2.mg? in the hopes that cropping will be minimized? If I understand correctly I will be able to revise the customer cropping during the proof period. True?

Another question: During the proof period is it a good idea to always add the 38 pixels around the edge using canvas resize so the trimmer will take off as little as possible?

Yet another: Smugmug says go ahead and upload pictures as big as they are, but wouldn't it help to downsize them with resampling i.e. make pictures smaller on Smugmug in order to make uploads and gallery viewing by customers faster? Then replace with big sizes during proof period?

Thanks

    Hi Pete!

    1. Cropping - You can change any and all crops that your customers do as long as you elect to have proof delay. You must also set your print prices at least $.01 more than the item price from EZ Prints. If you do not set a price at least $.01 in excess of the EZ Prints price the sales won't appear in your "Sales" tab of the control panel. Likewise if you don't set a print delay the images will go straight to "printing and processing". You can set the print delay in the customize gallery area for individual galleries.

Here's a link that shows what the images look like in your sales details area, there is an option for "adjust crop".

    2. 38 pixel - trim/bleed. I was not aware of the amount but, quick review of the help section bleed/trim details EZ prints suggestions and the 38 pixel canvas size adjustment. I've never had a problem with prints and full bleed images from them though.

    3. Smugmug resolution info can be found here. I personally think that less editting is better. And I choose not to change size or resolution unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Large images will upload from your computer to smugmug slower, but image size will not effect viewing time for your customer. Depending on how you choose to show you gallery customers could see thumbs only and as a pro user you can limit the largest size the customer can see in your Customize Gallery tab.

You must have images with a minimum resolution to even offer certain prints or merchandise or digital downloads. If the image you upload does not meet the minimum requirements those products will not show in your customer's cart as an option. Here are the minimum requirements

Thanks, Phyxius; I will ponder your answer much.
