i got the chance today, among other things, to shoot up some surfers. this was with canon 20d, 70-200 f/2.8L i.s. aboard, canon 1.4x and tamron 1.4x teleconverters stacked. iso 200, f/8, 1/1000th sec.

fun day!

it was, however, a relief to put on my ultrawide angle lenses at the end of the day :lol3

enjoy (surfing) photography,

Shooting surf shots is pretty frustrating. Hard to compate with the specialists with their great glass and deep experience. This is a good capture, but it suffers because water droplets obscure the surfer and the viewer can't help but wish for a better angle.

It took me all summer last year to figure out that shooting surf shots at dawn worked zillions of time better than evening or midday. Dawn vs evening was just a fact about Nantucket beaches and where the sun was. Midday, well, midday is midday. Of course on Nantucket, the surf only really comes up for big storms and not for long, so you just have to go with the reality of what happens.

The water spray tends to make a mess, no matter.

    If not now, when?

I've developed quite a love affair with my EF-S 10-22mm... It likes to stay mounted to my camera more than any of my other lenses combined... :uhoh

    Andy,

This came out very well thumb.gifthumb.gif And here we thought we'd have to jump in the water and rescue your camera if a big wave washed you off the rocks :lol
You definitely are not afraid to risk life, limb and more importantly, your kit to capture the "action" clap.gifclap.gif

    Hey Troy,
Other reasons to use the cheapo Tamron are that it fits any lens and it doesn't report aperture back to the camera. IOW, even with two 1.4X TC's on, Andy's camera saw F4 as the max aperture. Not F5.6, as it would have with two Canon TC's.

    What a fantasticthumb.gifthumb.gifthumb.gif Capture!

So this is what I can do to add the reach to my 70-200?? stacked...hmmm...more cost effective than purchasing say a 50-500 Bigma?

    Trish,
Using a TC will cost you some. It will cost you a stop in aperture and it will cost you some sharpness and detail the farther away your subject is. But, it will give you more reach clap.gif I would imagine that the Bigma would be pretty hard for you to shoot handheld. It's over 4 pounds and at full zoom (and handholding) you pretty much have to keep the speed up (1/1000 or faster). A tripod or monopod would take care of the weight issue, though thumb.gif
