Neither in Portugal.

I think this profession is ending.

Who/how can we - the Europe, North America, etc. - compete with the Chinese ?

I do know but I am not going to tell it here. It's just not the place.

Strong shadows can add drama to a scene. All depends on what you wanted, and what you wound up with.

They are good pictures.

It was the first time I had such a hight sucess rate.

I shot about 200 pictures and 100 are OK.

FWIW - I think I agree about the shadows in the second photo. Especially the shadow from his arm that falls across his body.

The first photo, however, I think I really like it.

As for the trip to Alaska - you're going to love it. I have a brother that lives just north of Anchorage (in Eagle River) who I visit about once every other year or so. OK, I go for the scenery and he just happens to provide a cheap place to stay

But, man, the scenery is to die for!

We are going to book the flights and the tour to Alaska in the first days of April

Some tours - the most exquisite - are already booked ! But these are rather expensive... We want to take the advantage of the price the US$ is ...

My wife wish we could fly throught S. Francisco or/and Las Vegas

for the comments on the photos...

I can't wait to shoot that bull fighter with the umbrella and the soft box.

Only in April however ... :cry

I really like with the ONLY exception that he's looking straight at the camera as he's trying to work with his hands.

Doesn't look natural. Either capture him journalisticly as he works, or pose him in the shop, but don't try to mix.

Just my take. I really like these type of environmental portraits.

Working with multiple lights is something that has been on my radar for a bit now but have yet to "make the time" to actually do it. I like how your lighting turned out!

I like it as well. The only thing I dont like is that it looks too posed, he has the deer caught in the headlight routine going on, not a good thing to have in my own opinion. The lighting is fine though, what you see and how you apply it is your own creativity at work thats what makes the work, yours.

To improve in your next shot. Maybe try shooting your subject while he's truly working at something rather than having him pose next to his tools and stuff. You can do 'candid posing' as you attempted here but have him seriously work on his projects while shooting him. It may require a bit of good acting on his part; or just photograph him while he's at work. You don't need to have him constantly looking at the camera, it looks a bit goofy, haha. sorry.

Also, to improve lighting, I would use barndoors or snoots for your backlight so the light doesn't spill out into the neighboring tables and tinsels (look at shit one right side). The main light looks like its been bounced off the wall, thats always a good diffusing technique. However, try and bring the flash closer, your subject for your wall bounce or use a bounce card on the flash while pointing to the ceiling in order to provide more light to your subject.

You can use a pringles tube for a make-shift snoot, make a hold on one side for the flash leave the normal opening open (just remember to eat all of the pringles prior to sticking your flash into one end).

But yeah good job at it. Keep it up now, you'll be shooting on location like a pro in no time!

Step 1: Buy can of Pringles
Step 2: Open can of Pringles
Step 3: Turn can of Pringles upside down over trash can
Step 4: Utlilize empty Pringles can as snoot
Step 5: Rejoice in how happy your "Castrol" is for the existence of trash cans!

LoL, seriously though, even if you throw away the chips, just wrap some black tape around an empty can and you have a cheap but very useable snoot!

Anyway, back on topic, I really like the one of him looking down at his work. I woudl like to see that one shot a little closer, and a little brighter. The one with him looking at the camera just feels off to me.
