Red-Tailed Being Chased

Hi Everyone,

All the birds are paired up and getting ready to nest but the pests are out in full force. The Crows and Ravens have been chasing everything, in the air and on the nest.

I got a couple shots of this RT being chased all over the place. The 2nd shot (looking off to the left) is the RT watching a Raven come diving in but it was way to far out of the frame to catch.

These were taken at a pretty good distance with 40D and 300mm + 1.4, handheld.

Hope you enjoy..

Great catch, Chris. I've seen this behaviour before but never close enough to get decent images such as yours.

I think D-Grin has the best images, photographers and format on the net. I've really been enjoying all the new images that have been posted lately.

I usually see this kind of behavior around here...only it's Blackbirds doing the harrassing. Those Crows can be very large and more dangerous, I would think.

    Very good captures, Chris. clap.gif

Hi Harv.. I've been watching this go on for months and have seen some spectacular arial displays but they've just been a bit to far out of range to get a good shot.

Here is one from a while back that was amazing to watch but I didn't post it because it took a lot of PP work.. No manipulation was done to this except saturation and sharpen, they were tangled up in mid air and had just let go.

About a month ago I watched as some Ravens had an immature eagle surrounded on the ground, about 6 of them. Every time the eagle would turn in one direction a raven would run in and peck at it. When it turned the other direction another would run in and peck. This went on for a while until the eagle flew into the trees.

These guys just don't let up. I've seen some Ravens that are so huge (up to 48" wing span according to my book) that I thought they were eagles until they came into clear view.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Nice series here! I see this behaviour too! If I hear the black birds and raven start up with their calls then I look around beacuse there is bound to be hawk getting its ground checked. I have even seen a RWBB attack a RT!

Hi Ric.. Thanks for the comments. What amazed me was the difference in size between the Crows and Ravens. Almost like the difference between a blackbird and crow in size.

Hi Brenton.. I often wonder why they go after each other when they aren't anywhere near the others nests. It seems to be a constant battle.

Hi Jeff.. fun but frustrating. I want to get some decent shots of all these guys going after each other.. but they are always "just" to far away.

That poor hawk looks a bit the worse for wear. The dang crows and ravens are relentless, aren't they. I've also seen them put the chase to a short-eared owl. They kept driving him higher and higher to a point it was barely a white spec in the sky. Amazing to watch.
