the rest were shot the last 2 days with my newly fixed bigma
I think this one might be a rough-legged light morphed hawk.

that was exactly what is throwing me off on it too..but the light wing pattern looks like a rough leg....I also thought maybe a harrier but I think the tail does not match that either.ne_nau.gif

I really like those last two. Great eye contact! That one does look like a rough legged hawk except for the belly but all other field marks seem to certainly point to a rough legged hawk. It is a nice BIF of that one.

Hi Dave.. Very nice shots. I captured a whole series of the same hawk a while back and I couldn't put a name to it. We had a ton of Rough-Legged hawks in the area at the same time so you might be right. My book shows the morph version but the tail and belly don't look the same, but the wings do.

Here's the link to the shots I got.. They are the same birds.

Great set, Dave. Love the first perched shot of the Red-tailed. That hawk in question sure looks like a roughie based on the underside markings but I would expect a single band on the tail. I don't know my hawks well enough but was wondering if it might be a juvenile in transition to adulthood. Just a wild @ss guess.

Great set of pictures. Each one could be a favorite. So I won't single out just one. I vote Rough legged also. Maybe you caught him with new tail feathers coming in. I've only seen the dark phase ones in my ventures afield.
