Saw it when I went to pick up the daughter, and it lasted long enough here for me to shoot it. Will process tomorrow, but just in case any of you are up, you may want to go peek outside!

    :cry :cry :cry

    My memory card is corrupt!!!!

Downloaded files, but they wouldn't open. Put card back into camera, and it says "coorupt". Was trying to open files with Bridge, and the computer told me it needed to be restarted, did so, and now the files are gone.

So, now I guess I need to figure out if there is an easy way to recover a dozen or so aurora shots - woe is me!

what type of card is it? Image rescue that comes with the Lexar Pro cards is a fantastic card recovery program.....it recovers both the raw and jpg's at the same time ...it does however rename/number the files....but that is minimal prob to be able to recover your files...............

    Do Not format the card!
Are you using a Mac? Google recover programs, there's PhotoRecovery you can try for free to see what the program can recover. My SanDisk card came with RescuePRO a file recovery utility. I tried both to help a friend recover her files.

I hope something works for you! I'd love to see the aurora photos!

    Hi Dee & Scott

I don't have that software, and cannot find a trial. I see it can be bought - I've just sent an email to work, as there are plenty of photogs there and someone might own it.

    Thanks, and wish me luck.

As long as you don't use the card again, there are programs that could possibly retrieve the files. I'm sure somebody in your area can help you. Good luck with that because I'd really LOVE to see the aurora pictures.

    Thanks everyone!!!

One of the guys at work has the Sandisk recovery software, so by tomorrow p.m. I should/could have some images to share!! clap.gif

Now, once recovered, should I toss the card?

    PS Ivar - too funny!

When you're done you can format the card and test it. It's not necessarily broken. Whether or not you still trust it is another matter.

I hope we get to see your pictures!

Do not toss the card!! The corruption was more than likely caused by restarting the computer during download....after recovery reformat the card in camera...give it a try to see how it reacts....or call the mfg'er and get a replcement...depending on your warranty....my lexars and Transcends all came with lifetime warranties......if they ask what the prob is..tell them the files keep coming up as corrupt and you have to keep running a recovery prog to retrieve the files...no need to tell them that your computer decided to glitch while dowing a download.....

So far, the Sandisk recovery program does not work - it just ends up in an endless loop, starting over before finishing and saying that it has 7M minutes left to be finished!!!

Anyway, here is a link to someone elses aurora photos - they are spectacular and I doubt mine would compare since I shot off my back deck at what I believe was the end of the show!

Wow, that must have been an incredible site!! I also hope to see an aurora some day... Occassionally they would be visible as far south as Seattle when I lived there, but the sky would always be cloudy/rainy (of course!).

Sounds like you've tried the obvious with your memory card... I've had a couple of experiences like that with film, but not with memory yet (knock on silicon!). At least there will be more auroras!

Wait two or three years for the Sun to get a bit more angry (we're just past the bottom of the solar minimum now), then google Lapland Finland, make it winter and ask me to arrange the rest :D

Or we can all go to Canada or Alaska, cause I've never been to either and both are northern enough. thumb.gif

    Also: Yeowsa indeed!

If you are truly interested in seeing the aurora, you just need to come north, young people, come north. In Edmonton we probably have aurora activity 6 or more times per year, but are likely to actually be able to see it (clear, not 4 a.m. kind of stuff) a few of those times. But NASA and space weather track this activity and can predict it a few days in advance. So If you really hope to se it, and are willing to take a flight last minute, I'm happy to host! Of course, if you venture father north, the likelihood of seeing one increases.

Still no luck with the card recovery!

You have a Mac right? I think your only possible remaining hope might be to run fsck_msdos on the card. I'm not a Mac expert though (yet).

Or put it in a Windows system and run Error-checking: Auto-Fix system errors, Scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Once that is done, if it recovers files, it still might take a bit of work to recover the file names.

However, the utilities you've tried may have already done the equivalent of that... ne_nau.gif

Okay - I do not know what that acronym in your first sentence is?......

See this post for my most recent update on recovery attempt. I work with a bunch of engineers and fellow geeks so someone is likely to accept the challenge. I have a mac and also have three PCs in the house (though trust none of them) and a PC at work.

Antway, the recent attempt suggests the files are cr@p anyway and not worth more effort. rolleyes1.gif

    Thanks

Ann, good luck with that corrupt card of yours. Sure hope you can recover those shots soon. I agree with others about not tossing the card out just yet. Have you searched all the threads and posts here at dgrin on recovery software? There's been a ton of them over the years.

Found some decent aurora photos of the March 8th, 2008 event here at Spaceweather.com
