I frequently visit the local botanical gardens here in Southern California, and I always bring my camera. The diversity of interesting things to photograph in these places always astounds me.
One subject which has interested me is how plants have evolved their various defensive capabilities.
Here's some shots of some of the things I found.

My first thought was ouch as well. Amazingly though, some animals use this defence for themselves as well.

Ooooooooouch even, these look like they'd be quite nasty to come in contact with especially the second and third ones.
