I started collecting antique brass flare guns two years ago. This was my first purchase. It's an A. H. Fox Very Pistol from WWI.
I took this photo to practice photographing metal.
C&C, please.

"Your decisions on whether to buy, when to buy and what to buy should depend on careful consideration of your needs primarily, with a little of your wants thrown in for enjoyment, After all photography is a hobby, even for pros."

Looks good, stands out real nice against the black background.
The right side of the image is lighter on the barrel and half way across the gun than it is to the left of the image.
Still looks good nice collectors item Lee.

:skippy Everyone has the right to be stupid, but some people just abuse the privilege :dgrin
K.: For this one, the lighting was fairly simple: Two lights at about 45 degrees each. The goal was to avoid large specular highlights and, as Skippy just pointed out to me, shadow.
Skippy: I looked carefully at the gun, and its surface is even all along. So, I got to thinking that maybe I'd set the gobo on the left too far in. But, since it causes a shadow in the brighter part of the gun (just below the hammer), I don't think that's the case. I'm thinking maybe it's the curvature of the barrel, but that doesn't explain the chamber. So, I went back into Photoshop and did a little dodging and burning to even it out, lightened it a bit and increased the shaprness.
Improvement? I appreciate your thoughts, past and future.
