Can anyone point me to a general knowledge thread about feeds, how they work, and what you can do with them from smugmug? I'd like to get a general understanding and then possibly come back to the forum with more pointed questions.

Thanks in advance.

Checkout the Wikipedia page on RSS for some general information about RSS. And then offcourse subscribe to some of the feeds Allen posted. I subscribe to the SmugMug RSS feeds of all my SmugMug friends to easily keep informed about updated galleries. Works very well.

It seems feeds do not supply updates on images in password protected galleries, correct? If so, they are significantly less useful to me.

Correct. Feeds don't show unlisted and/or password protected galleries or the photos in them.

    well it depends actually.

If you request a feed as the logged in owner of a site, it will include images from private and password protected albums.

But it really depends on exactly you are subscribing to the feed and which feed.

I'm more interested in it from the perspective of my viewers. In my case that means in-laws and other friends and relatives across the country who would like to receive updates and newest images of my kids as they are posted. Unfortunately, all of my galleries that feature kids are behind passwords, and I have no intention of changing that.

    That makes a feed a no-go, I assume?

I'm in the exact same situation and I use sharegroups (great for sharing unlisted galleries) to share my pictures with family and friends. Other then emailing them I haven't found a way to automatically notify them of changes yet.
