Hi Y'all,

DPR has just done its review of the D300

Phil Askey's concluusion was:

"Nikon's biggest problem now will be bettering the D300; it raises the bar to a new high, and represents the state of the art despite strong competition from the likes of Canon, Sony and Olympus. There's simply no better semi-professional digital SLR on the market."

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Wow! I would love to see the D300 in action along with some of its best long lenses like the:

    Nikkor 500mm, f/4D IF-ED AF-S II
    Nikkor 300mm, f/4D AF-S ED-IF

No, wait, do we know someone who can help:

Isn't it funny how we rely on reviews to allow us to except how good the D300 is. If anyone shot a dozen test pictures will instantly know the leap between the D200 and the D300. Of course it is the same difference between the D100 and the D200.headscratch.gif

So where am I going with this?? Just like the Home PC world, the new model will always make you wish you just waited a little longerrolleyes1.gif

It's a terrific camera and I'm sure enjoying it.

BTW I found Thom Hogan's review to be more useful and critical.

Thanks again, Harry. I'm a big fan of Thom Hogan and have relied on his reviews and insight for years.

One thing that I saw in his review concerns the Picture Control system in the D300. Appears it doesn't effect RAW images. And neither does some other stuff, like the High ISO Noise Reduction, discussed on a thread I started here . And what irks me is that these features not effecting RAW is not mentioned in the D300 manual. At least not that I see. I wish they would be more specific about what effects what in the manual, especially give a 400+ page novel! I keep testing some of these things at home and then am not sure of the results. Another reason I'm grateful fo folks like Thom and Phil Askey at dpreview.

What else are we missing, I wonder?

Briefly went through some of Thom Hogan's review and I think he gives a more real world review overall.
I agree with his accessment about the noise level he feels comfortable using and also about the importance of proper exposure on the noise level.

Having said all that though, it's a nice abut a bit expensive camera.
Good deal for Nikon shooters though.

    I love mine
I bought a D300 at Thanksgiving and LOVE it. I can't wait to get it back from the shop. The first wedding I did, I noticed the back panel freezing up every now and then. I tried several things to fix it but ended up sending it back last week. So sad. I have a wedding coming up in a very dark interior. I could use my D200, but decided to rent a D300 instead thumb.gif

Just got my vertical grip in today too, can't wait to pair them together.

I haven't seen many reports of problems on the net, I'm sure it's a fluke.
