Took a hike yesterday with my wife. It was hazy and the light was a bit odd, but it was a nice hike.



I just got some new cards--white balance and warm balance, so I ran a test. Here's the white:



and here's warm:

(yeah, I know, there's a big goober on the sensor I didn't clean up. I shoulda cloned it, but forgot. I did clean the sensor when I got home, though

and lastly, no macro lens, but I couldn't pass up these flowers.

Very nice set David, goobers and all! And a lovely looking wife. Where is Charmlee and where is that arc of coast you're looking onto?

It's above Malibu. That's Point Dume and Zuma.

I like your photos David.
I've just obtained the Whibal chips as well so I was interested to see you using them. There's quite a difference between the white and warm pictures, I like the look of the colours in the white version personally. Which one was closest to how you remember the sceane?

Yeah, the warm balance cards are more extreme than I was hoping. The way I remember the light, it was not as white as the white balance cards, it was a bit yellow-ish, actually. Not really late in the day, but the sun was far enough down to start warming up, and the haze was pretty heavy. But the warm cards are just too much for that scene.

I need to test the warm balance cards in sunlight, more midday. And shade. And I'm also interested in what they would do in a lighting set-up, which I'll test once I get one

BTW, if you watch the tutorials online for the whibal cards, you'll learn that the correct pronunciation is WHY-bull.

Thanks for the info. I did watch some of the online tutorials which made me want to try the Whibal cards. Before that I was using just a regular old greycard to try to get the WB right.

I still tend to tweak the settings afterwards anyway, but I'm hoping that the Whibal will enable me to skip that in future.

By the way, I like the way the artist looks to be painting the same scene as your first photograph.
