I'm posting my personal favorites from an 18 shot series. Magnifications range from about 1.5x to 4x and all photos were taken with an MPE-65mm macro lens + a Canon 40D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a diffused MT-24EX macro twin flash (-1/3 FEC). Minimal post processing (never more than two minutes per photo).

It's not luck really -it's the weather. Temps in the low teens and partly cloudy skies create a "stop and go" environment for these bees -one minute they have enough heat to fuel their metabolisms and the next they don't. There have been two occasions this season where I've actually picked the flower that the bee was on and moved it to an area where there was no wind so I could get the shots that I wanted. Later on in the spring I won't photograph them as often -they'll be too active...

When you say stop, how stopped are these guys getting, it's far from warm where I am, but that hasn't slowed down the honeybees in the slightest (more or less the same conditions you decribe) do I just have psycho canadian bees to deal with?
I was going to say the same thing.
These photographs are amazing, I'm really liking them.
I haven't seen any bees at all here. Not that I have the same setup, but still would be nice to see some insects to get pictures of.
It depends on the species. I've seen these Miner Bees slowed to a crawl in weather that didn't affect honey bees at all...
