All kidding aside Mr Rocky Raccoon fell out of one of the palm trees at work and was rescued by the animal lovers here. He's about 10 days old, eyes still shut

Years ago, we had a pair of coons that we fed after their mom got killed on the road. It was all fine until it was time for them to leave. They would not do so.

We ended up contacting the local conservation district who had a place for them until they were ready to be reintroduced into the wild. It was then that we found out that keeping and raising them was not only illegal but not good for them.

When we took them in, we were amazed at the number of orphans that others had also brought in....dozens!

Check with the local DNR, I know here in Ohio it can wind up costing you $5000.00 in fines! Believe it or not you can get a freakin tiger or lion easier then you can get an indiginous critter like a coon or a skunk in Ohio.

When I was ~18 my mother rescued a raccoon of similar age. At first it was really cool. He fit into the household pet scheme rather well (my mother managed to turn a HUGE house basically into a weird kind of barn). But once he got about 4-5 months old, he figured out he wasn't a cat or a dog or a pig or a horse and that he was in fact a raccoon. There is a reason they are solitary. As adolescents and adults they are some of the most ornery and vicious creatures you will ever meet. Not to mention tenacious and impervious to almost any form of discouragement you can bring yourself to administer.

In short, not a pet I recommend for kids. :(

EDIT: For the record, pre-adolescent 'coons are REALLY freakin' cute and fun. It's just once they start to grow up.
