Even though I love my Smugmug camera strap, I came across this new strap called the "Black Rapid" strap that looks pretty cool and useful even though its a bit pricey. The cheaper version is $44, but it lets your camera hang more comfortably to your side, and still gives instant access to it.
Here is there website.

That strap looks great! I am not sure how well it would work out for us women-folk though :cry

That looks like a cool strap. I wonder why he wore a black shirt though. Made it hard to actually see the black strap.

Very interesting. I don't trust those plastic clips, but the metal clip/loop style looks nice.

Still doesn't look quite as slick as the Black Rapid, but definately a step up from the standard neck strap.

Now if only I could get a smugmug version... ;)

I trust it with a $10K set up and go hiking through the woods. Not to worry! :D

Hmmm. What is the lowest temp you've been out with that setup? I only ask because I had an incedent where I was packing up gear after a video shoot (was about 21 degrees F) and when put my tripod in the bag the plastic quick releas plate holder snapped - not a on a seam, but across one.

Perhaps a fault in the plastic (most likely) but still makes me untrusting of plastic parts in cold weather.

Do Nikon lenses have permanent tripod mounts on them? The lens I would love to use this with is a Canon 70-200, but not if I have to attach that big clunky O-ring type tripod mount to it. Do you know whether it can attach to the bottom of the camera body? The website is uninformative, but the video refers specifically to the lens' tripod mount.

the video indicates that they have hardware that will screw into the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera. So, there you go, if you trust the camera lens mount to carry the weight of the 70-200 (don't know which flavor of that lens you have - the 2.8 IS - I wouldn't trust it....).

I believe that you can also mount it to the tripod mount on those heavier lenses.

It looks like a cool strap, but I would be afraid to walk around with it downtown, or any busy place or place with obstacles, really. I'd be to afraid my camera would bump into things and people hanging on the side like that ne_nau.gif

For a while last year I used a similar arrangement of 2 cameras, one on each side, when shooting weddings. Even with flash brackets and flashes, it didn't take long to get used to the fact that I needed twice the room to get through spaces. And you quickly learn to control the movement of the cameras. Not a big deal.

Though I like the idea and have let my cameras hang at my side with the smugmug and Canon strap, it wouldn't be on my 70-200 tripod mount. My luck it will simply unscrew. Or something will push the clamp and unlock it.

I think it looks great and addresses a very real problem I always have with carrying my camera slung over one shoulder.

    I'm ordering one now!

    FastenR
The FastenR is the point of contact between the camera and the R-Strap. Made from aircraft aluminum with stainless steel threads, then powder-coated in black, it screws into the tripod socket located on the underside of the camera body or lens. The lock nut is then tightened down to ensure that the FastenR doesn’t inadvertently unscrew.

The R1/R2 strap itself and its included fasteners are more than adequate ... what I do not like is the mention in the video and elsewhere of attaching it to a "d-ring" on a quick-release plate.headscratch.gif

Now THAT is foolish ... I've had the screw "handles" (they really are not d-rings) come off on my mounted quick-release plates on occasion. Other than that, I've sewn up similar slings/straps several times over the past 50 years and such straps work great when quick access of multiple cameras is needed.thumb.gif

The company states "If you’re using a tripod plate with a d-ring, you may not need the FastenR"; I personally would strongly suggest using the FastenR or something sturdy, NEVER the d-ring of a tripod plate!

    Looks really interesting.

Problem is, it attaches to the tripod mount to hook to the camera. I have my RRS L-plate on there, permanently mounted, so I don't see myself practically using it ne_nau.gif

My RRS plates have a threaded hole...so it would work. The only problem is removing it so you could tri or mono pod the lens. Still debating that myself.:D

I like this actually... I didn't at first but now that i look at it, seems convenient...

Only thing is, when I shoot things, I have my camera bag on my shoulder exactly where that strap would go... but this would be a cool strap idea for a camera bag.

I like the quick pockets on the shoulder portion

I use the Black Rapid too. If you are slinging another camera over one shoulder, go with the Up-Strap. They work great for that. The Wapiti straps are nice too.

    Two R-Straps
There is a mod, so you can wear two R-Straps. You can find the info here.
