Giving direction to someone at a shoot..

Hi, my name is Dana. I've been playing around with my Canon 40D. I've had it a few months and recently went down to Miami to return a favor to a friend and shoot her and her baby at this garden place. I kind of just told her to look around, do whatever comes natural hoping that taking a bunch of picks I'd find good ones when I looked back at them later. I asked for her opinion and she mentioned she felt lost and didn't know what to do. So I guess my questioin is, how do you give someone direction on where to look, the face to make, etc...I found it was a little harder to shoot her and the baby than it was to shoot my own daughter. I just am trying to improve my direction giving skills. Help! lol Thanks.
