Hey I am looking into getting some equiptment for my school's newspaper staff and we are looking for a good lens for indoor basketball/sports in general inside.
Do you find that the 85mm 1.8 focuses as well as the 70-200F/2.8L IS does??
I have used the latter for sports now for a semester but never had the other... It is about all we would need for us though so i would be okay with the 85 because of the budget!
So yes... does it work just as well?

I was close to the rim. I shot from the "mezzanine level" in a warehouse-type building with three courts. It was lots of fun and I can't wait until the next tourney there (Memorial Day).
After reading several threads here, I bought the 85mm 1.8 to solve the problem, and it has become my favorite indoor basketball lens! Very fast, and just the right distance from the corners of the court.
I have the nikon version and I have found it is also great for football in low light for getting action from the hash marks to the sidelines.
For sports photography, I think the 85 1.8 and 70-200 2.8 make a great combo.
I don't know about that. If you are using a 70-200 2.8, you use the 70 focus for the sideline action anyway.
Heck, using a 300 2.8 can be dangerous because you can't get out of the way fast enough lugging one of those canons around.
