Hi Y'all,

I've been keeping an eye on the anhinga's nest at the wetlands. The chick finally made its appearance.

Shot with the D300 (I needed the extra reach) and the Nikon 500mm f/4 + the 1.7 TC (giving me 1275mm reach). I used an EV adj of + 0.33 (they were slightly darker than the background) and used center weighted metering.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Wow! These are some amazing shots Harry. As with most birds, the chicks are strange looking little things aren't they!

    I like 'em! thumb.gif

On the first shot (the best imo) if you could remove 3 twigs (not easy...I know) I think it would be an awesome shot. One behind each head and the oof one on the left. That leaf behind the fine feathers on the adult might be very tough to do.

The soft colors on the background is great and those twigs detract from it...I think.ne_nau.gif

Hi Harry.. Very NICE shots especially with such a long reach. Man that is quite a beak (looks more like a stiletto) they have. I could see that doing some damage if another bird gave them a hard time..clap.gifclap.gif

Thanks Trish. I had been keeping an eye on that nest for awhile and was surprised by how big the chick was when I finally saw it. When you consider how ugly it is its understandable that mom was keeping it out of sight. :D

Thanks Ric. One of the problems with nesting birds is that they build their nests out of twigs and leaves. Then the suckers build the damn nest in a tree that has twigs and leaves.

Normally I would have cloned out the twigs behind the head but they had leaves on them which were right behind the anhingas feathers. There was just no way to clone them out and have the pic look ok. Tried a different angle and I still had those suckers in the shot.

Thanks Chris. The anhingas built the nest in a real good spot to capture them. You have a clear view into the nest and its well lit in the early morning light (backlit from noon on). The anhingas use their beak to spear fish.

Many thanks Jeff but the chick is definitely a tad more agressive than some of the other chicks I've met.
