I am taking my sons senior pictures. And would like to add his name and graduating year in the bottom right hand corner. Which software would be best for that? I have Photoshop Extended CS3 but haven't played with it much. Will this work for me or should I invest in another program? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Photoshop is more than capable of this. In general, you would create a new text layer and put the text on that layer. You can then change/move that text on top of your image without disturbing the image at all.
Here are a couple articles about various ways to do this in Photoshop:

Forgive me, but it is like asking if this 747 will get me there. Yes, and a whole lot more. if you struggle, you might try something simpler like googles picasa http://picasa.google.com/index-new.html
