I am new to photography but have read pretty deeply in word of mouth/ viral marketing. (Tipping Point; Unleashing the Ideavirus, etc.) One of the things that makes an idea spread is how easy it is to spread it.

Because this, I would think studios would gladly provide low resolution, watermarked, web ready images that are great for Facebook, but are never going to print. People love to share pictures and in a digital age, it is all done on the Internet.

Yet, when we had our Sr. Pic done for our kids, the sudio strictly forbade this. What am I missing? It seems one of the best way for a photographer to spread the word.

Because if the watermark is large then nobody will use it on facebook or any other site. If the watermark is small then everybody will use cheap software to just crop it out. Either way this results in no exposure. Also, even if the watermark (or signature/studio name) was left intact, who's actually going to look at that? In places like facebook the pictures may well be too small to actually determine who took the picture. I doubt a lot of kids are going to be posting the name and address of the studio even if the studio required it.
