Showing subcategory on home page

Is there a way I can show a sub category header on my home page rather than the broader main category?
For example, I am now showing "sports" as one category on my home page. I only have one subcategory under "sports," which is "bicycle racing-cyclocross," which has several galleries in it. Another category I have is "airplanes," which has only one subcategory in it.
I would prefer to show the subcategories for these two groups on my home page, which are more content specific, rather than the broad categories, "Airplanes" and "Sports" --at least until I get more sub categories.
Is there a way to do this?
