The Reznick Flip

Hi you'll,

Last November I took a workshop with Ron Reznick ( http://www.digital-images.net/index.html ). For 3 days we shot with Ron at Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and on Sanibel Island. During those 3 days he captured a heron doing what we called the "Reznick Flip". Ron told us that herons and egrets, after they make a catch, will flip it between their upper and lower bills before they swallow it. Since then I've been trying to catch one doing the "Reznick Flip" without a lot of success. I had some luck today.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    Hey Shay,

Thanks. I must have spent around 45 minutes with him and took around 75 shots. He would periodically jump off the pipe he was perched on and to do his hunting routine (wings aspread, jumping/flying around the water and then back tot he pipe). I never saw him do the flip (it happens very, very fast) so I didn't know I had caught it until I got home.

    Hey Trish,

Thanks. Those birds at the WL are getting irksome. The egrets, ibises, spoonbills and woodstorks are still congregating in one large group. As soon as you get within camera range they fly off. It was much easier when they were dispersed. I did find a neat woodpecker and a pair of Sandhills with chicks in tow.

Darn it they're Canon lenses. If they were Nikon I would encourage you to sell and make a bid on them. Oh well, Thanks anyhow. :D

Awesome photo -- I've watched herons and egrets (and taken zillions of images) for years and had no idea that there was a "flip" involved when they caught a fish.clap.gif

Very beautiful shot Harry, I think that these guys have learned the trick on purpose just to tease photographers. We have them here in Europe too, probably coming from the same circus...
