OK so I took the big plunge on the d300 with the 18-200mm lens and had a good chance to learn both the camera and to try to shoot my first baseball game. I know it's the wrong lens but I tried a lot of what I've read on this forum. C&C welcome and needed :D The full gallery is at http://rsartin.smugmug.com/gallery/4708867_QztcM#278614956_cJNzp

Good job Randy. I think the saturation is a little too high for my taste, but you have some nice shots in there. Well done. I love the D300 too (I do hope you got the $300 off the combined bundle of D300 and the 18-200)

Totally agree with the saturation comment. Meant to mention that originally. I'm just glad there's enough color around here and I have a camera that will allow me to blow the saturation :D

Oh yeah, got it with the $300 instant rebate, Thanks!

Lol- go for it then. I really like shot #2 btw

Have you downloaded the D2X settings from Nikon's website? I heard they are good to use on the D300...

    Enjoy your new toy

    Hi Randy,

Your timing is good - great action around the ball. One thing to keep in mind is the magic formula of face/ball/action. If you have all of these in your photo, chances are it will be a compelling shot. Your next purchase should be a nice piece of glass that will make your D300 sing! I have the D80 and purchased the 70-200 2.8 VR lens recently and it's raised my level of quality action photos (IMO anyway mwink.gif )

    Keep up the great work!

Nice shots, I like #4, good framing.

Sometimes using a shorter smaller lens, makes the shot easier to get, you can just move faster.
Nothing wrong with the 18-200 during daylight.

Shoot the D300 at ISO 1600 in daylight, then you can keep high shutter speeds.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm doing more baseball in a week or so, motorcycle racing Saturday, and best of all a Special Olympic Event this Friday...all that to say I just rented a 70-200mm 2.8 and a 1.4 TC for two weeks, so maybe I can get it all figured out over the next month or so. At baseball I'll concentrate on getting more faces and I never even thought about cranking the ISO up in daylight. Again...many, many thanks for the help! Oh yeah, I'll be sure to watch the saturation a little better!
