Taking an Nikon Series E prime for a spin

I've got a Nkon 28mm f2.8 Series E lens for the weekend to try out. So far not too impressed. They just look flat to me. Maybe it's just my lack of skill (novice both with DSLR and MF lenses). The Series E lenses are reported to have some of the best Nikon optics, at least according to www.nikconlinks.com's lens site.
Anyone got an opinion to share? Do I stick with it or move on?

Any full sized image links or 1:1 crops? It's hard to determine anything from small images.

The lighting on all of these images is pretty flat. Try lighting with a little more contrast and definition in mind. You will probably like the results much better.
