Have a 420ex, looking for more...

So here is the situation, I purchased a 420ex off of Andy last year, and it has worked great for me. THe only problem is that I am running into situations where I wish that I could manually adjust the flash. I'm looking for advice on what to do. I really don't have a whole lot of funds, so I am looking to trade the 420ex.
So would the best option be to look to trade teh 420ex for a 430ex? If this is what I do what would be the additional cash the 430ex is worth vs the 420?
OR
Is there another brand flash unit out there that could do everything the 430ex could (regarding E-TTL, etc...) and either be possible cheaper or more powerful? Even if I do decide to go this route I would still be looking to trade the 420ex as I can't afford the cash right now for a new flash.
Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

My son took my DG 500 out for a shoot in some quite cold weather a couple of months ago. When he attempted to remove the flash from the camera, well the lower build quality reared it's head. The hotshoe foot on that flash is now toast. The flash still works but not as an on-camera unit. I'm using it as an off-camera flash - the optical slave in it is wonderful - just bungee cord it to something and there you go! BTW - the optical slave feature is something that Canon has, so far, elected not to include in their flashes.

It's probably worth sending to Sigma for repairs.

Check the used departments at KEH, B&H and Adorama.
