I upgraded to a D300 five weeks ago from my D50 and had been very pleased. Then I decided to finally use the 700-200 VR lens on this baby and my head exploded. Here in Boston we just had the 2008 Women’s Olympic trials for the marathon and the next day the Boston Marathon. I knew that this camera & lens combo was pretty good, but was a little unsure as I couldn’t see much detail on my LCD screen due to glare. Because of this I was getting nervous.

Once runners started coming I put it on Dynamic AF, 9 Point AF, AF-C focus, always 2500+ Shutter and usually f4 aperture. After a few pictures I knew I was going to have phenomenal day. All photos below are the HQ JPEGs straight from camera. No PP.

These two are at the top of Heartbreak hill in Newton hill in Newton.

Near the top of the hill….running on fumes:

I wanted to get a real close up pic of a runner’s foot hitting the pavement, well this was better than I expected. Only because my camera was this fast and the lens also did I get this head-exploding awesome shot.

I also got this great shot:

After this experience I will finally pony up the dough and by myself the Nikon 70-200 VR lens. This lens and Marathons is a great match!!

I don’t have a lot of other marathon pics from last weekend up though. Just click on the individual picture and it will take you back to its gallery.

Let me know what you think! What do you think of the technique and composition? Thanks!

Nice series of shots. I also upgraded from the D50 to the D300 and have enjoyed it. I've been contemplating a purchase of the 17-50 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. I can't justify it yet, but need to do so before my trip to Munich in June.
