Smugmug slow?

I noticed that Smugmug is slow lately. All other sites I regularly visit are still snappy but some Smugmug features are really sluggish at the moment.

For example:
- the control panel is annoyingly slow (specifically controlpanel.mg and cobrand.mg)
- it takes a long time to save my customization settings. After pressing update, "cobrand.mg" takes a fair amount of time to finally save my settings
- If I go into a gallery(eg. http://www.peschfamily.com/2006) it takes a while to build the thumbnails for the galleries (and there seems to be a pause before it actually starts displaying the thumbs)
- Doing batch jobs takes a long time (eg. changing the thumbnails to square for a gallery containing 200 pictures). After you press submit, it takes an unusual long time to return to the confirmation screen.

Any other people experiencing the same issues?
I am trying to find out what the root cause of this problem is (my customization, the network connection or Smugmug?)

thanks,
Raul

    Hi!

    So, a few things: http://www.peschfamily.com/2006
is loading 176 items, and Firebug tells me it's a total of 732Kb. That's quite a bit of stuff. :)

A page like this comes up nearly instantly for me: http://www.peschfamily.com/gallery/4343645_5yyrW#256927415_Um98t

There are some things we can do to help diagnose your speed - it depends on lots of things. The page you are viewing, your connection from computer to router, router to cable modem/dsl box, your connection to your ISP, your ISP's route to SmugMug.

Some things that will help us help you:

    Speed test:
    http://smugmug.speedtest.net
We are the San Jose pyramid. Please let us know what the results are.

    Traceroute:

Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC:
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046
That will help us see if and where any problems may be. Paste the results back to use here.

To run a traceroute on a Mac, follow the instructions here:
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3073291
Paste the results back to use here.

Would you mind running a line quality test for us? Go here:
    http://www.dslreports.com/linequality
Sign up and run the test. Registration there is free. After you run the test, copy the link to the results for us. That will let us know if there is an issue with the line preventing photos from arriving to our servers.

Paste the results back to use here.

Thanks for your help Andy, below are the results from the test:

That is a lot indeed. I will try to create featured photos (fixed thumbs) for all thumbnails so that the results can be cached. ps. there is no batch way of doing this, correct?

That said, I did some tests again and it all seems to respond a lot quicker now. Control panel is loading quickly again and batch jobs (via tools.mg) also seem to respond a bit quicker than yesterday.

    Cheers,

    Raul,

I'm glad to hear that the speed is better than before. It sounds like that has been some temporary glitch on which side I can't say.

The next time you have speed issues, please make sure that you run the reverse traceroute (with the longer instructions on the link Andy posted) as this is more revealing as the traceroute run from SmugMug to you.

The linequality test shows a bit of package loss from the west coast and a problem most likely outside of your ISP's reach close to the linequality test server.
It might be helpful to reset your router or cable modem by unplugging it 30 seconds from the outlet. After that, plug it back in and it'll reinitialize itself opening a fresh connection.
