He called me today and was very cool (seems young and personable)! Made me a great offer, and look forward to his products.

I'd let the credit card company handle this kind of situation.

The strap website claims to be a backorder issue. But I've grown to be leary of any "vendor" website that's not willing to provide a phone number. I had a problem with such a car stereo site last year, but the credit card company gave me a credit, and pursued the matter directly with the store.

However......I did notice he provides a phone number on his photo website:
    http://www.ronalddeanphotography.com/weddings/

Good luck. Hopefully its nothing more than a good idea that's temporarily gotten out of control.

I did some digging on the web site and found this:

seems to have a phone number there... reverse lookup says it's a cell phone though. ne_nau.gif Hope it resolves quickly enough.

Heh am i the only one who hasnt requested a smug mug strap? Only reason is, i don't actually use smug mug. Sure im a Dgrinner, but i run my own site for my photos, so i'd feel like a kinda traitor for wearing that strap.

Now, a DGRIN strap id sure put on

I like the idea of the one hook from the Black Rapid, and easily to remove, but the SmugMug strap was a huge help on my trip!

    R-Straps On Backorder

Black Rapid is experiencing over whelming demand for the R-strap. And at this time we are back ordered until May 2nd. We apologize for this inconvenience.. We are a working hard to keep up with the R-straps popularity and good customer service. Thanks so much for choosing the R-strap for your shoot.

ne_nau.gif Sorry to hear all this, I'd like to try one of the straps out myself.

The black Rapid looks kinda cool but also looks like it would be a pain if you need to attach cam to T-pod or M-pod.....you'd hafta remove the connector from the cam first.......I love my SM straps but if I am gonna be hiking or have the cams attached to me ALL DAY....I swop out for my BINO-HARNESS FROM Crooked Horn Outfitters Watch video HERE

They told me that it is possible to get them with the leather piece on the back blank if so specified when ordering ...of course one might have to wait an extra week or 2 as this would be a very special request.......these are the same ones branded as Sportsmans warehouse, Cabelas, BassPro., Eagle Optics (Swarovski), etc etc.....COULD ALSO BE BRANDED FOR SMmwink.gif.....keeps cam right next to body helps to stabilize when shooting especially with long lenses .....normally I adjust mine so that the 7D w/24-70 is above the 7D w/70-200....both on at same time and NO neck strain what so ever....all the weight is on shoulders and back........

just like any cam strap.....errrrr......with snap clips .....they are plastic but I have had absolutely no trouble with them even in bitter cold winter.......since cam straps have gone back to athread thru type.....I have started adding large round rings (key ring rings if you will) to the triangle strap connectors to make things easier for me.....especially if I am wearing a coat with harness underneath and need to hook to 'POD I just unsnap both snaps and mount to 'pod........keeping the cam harness on..........

I'm buying a second body (hopefully a 40D) and shudder to think that I'll need to use something other than the Smugmug strap...... Any chance of a second strap? :D

I would like to chime in here and add my immeasurable ('cause it's so small mwink.gif) influence to this question. I love my ONE smuggy strap and would love to know if there is any possibility of actually buying a couple or four of them? I, like many here, have multiple cameras, my wife has one, my some has his, - you get the idea. Would be great to have them for my upcoming trip to Alaska (I get to play tourist for a couple of weeks and will be carrying one or more of my cameras everywhere I go!).

That blackrapid thing looks like it was designed for people who want a new camera (because they banged theirs into something or it failed) Any strap can fail however as I learned at the zoo a few weeks ago. My smugmug strap (which I keep long) came unthreaded on one side and I dropped my 20D with 85 f1.8 attached. It dropped from about hip heigth and hit handle side, then selector side. I had a hood on the 85 f1.8 (who doesn't use a hood all the time) so it wasn't scratched at all. The top of selector dial came off and the recess where it goes in was chewed up, some minor paint loss scrapes by the left and right stap lug. After some careful filing and reshapping the recess I glued the selector top back on. I tested the 85 f1.8 and it seems fine. Fine enough that I shot this with it @f2 that weekend.

    272876880_w2K2F-L.jpg

The drop made me realize the 20D was not really a reliable backup if I was using it for personal use. So I bought a 40D and the 20 became a backup to the 30D and my camera for personal use. Moral of the story...check your strap and tape your tails...and don't carry your camera around your side...keep it in front. BTW I in no way blame the smugmug strap...it could have happened on any strap really, I've never been a huge fan of straps in the first place.

    R-strap musings...
I'm not going to deny the innovative approach of the R-strap.

However, I must also note that:
    • It only works for a single body. Carying two (which I normally do during the events) in a criss cross pattern would nullify the convenience of the one that goes underneath.
Or you would have to carry them on a shoulder instead of across the chest, thus creating the opportunity for any/both to slip off...ne_nau.gif
    • As an event shooter, the last thing I want is to have my camera(s) on my hip (thus widening my "cross-section" and increasing the chance of hitting guests or tables/chairs/pews/walls/etc.) or behind my back (carrying 3 grand$ or more openly on your back on a single easy to open connection point in a strange crowd? no thanks!).
I think it may serve pretty well to the needs of a certain category of photographers (e.g. sports photogs who operate infielfd, in a wide open space far from the crowds). I'm just not one of them ne_nau.gif

You can ask anybody who was at Glacier NP (Montana) during SM shootout '07 if they liked this setup:-)
I also happen to know that Scott (Quier that is:-) has come out with a solution very similar in nature to R-strap with the only difference that it cost him maybe a buck or two for two sets, if at all...:-)

It's not about how much you carry, it's all about HOW you carry it.
I've been in "carrying" business since I was a kid (my parents took me on many fairly serious hikes, and when I grew up I continued on my own), so I learned a thing or two about that trade:-)

Yeah while it is more comfortable then my Canon straps, the grip on the clips are not as tight. Have to keep an eye on it.

I use an UpStrap (you can google it). Seems to me to be very secure, way beyond spec, and the strap ends are triple threaded and clamped with a keeper, so no fear at all of one letting go (famous last words, huh?) Plus it is a thin strap (but very strong material), doesn't look like I'm carrying a tank, and the shoulder pad is heavy knobby rubber, so stays put very well. After all our bad experiences with all sorts of equipment and suppliers, nice to be able to share a happy one.
See my work at http://www.flickr.com/photos/26525400@N04/sets/. Policy is to initially upload 10-20 images from each shoot, then a few from various of the in-process shoots each time I log on, until a shoot is completely uploaded.

Optech super classic strap with the pro loop connectors is the only way to go. Can't come undone! They are even more comfortable than the SM strap.

SmugMug gives out free straps?!? I'd follow that link and sign up for one right away but my company seems to believe that smugmug is a domain that should be blocked.

I am using a lowepro strap but only because I can't find one better. My favorite strap is one from the mid 70s that my dad gave me. It kept my AE1 and later on my F1 safe from dropping. It's an old friend that reminds me of my dad and makes me nostalgic for my manual B&W film days. I'd move it across to my 40D but the clips are those old style triangular spring steel ones. *sigh* they don't make straps like that any more...
