Frustrated. Watermarks un-did custom thumbnails!

So I really love the new square thumbnails, but my biggest problem is that they don't usually crop right automatically. I am PRAYING for a bulk thumbnail tool that allows me to set all the crops in a gallery on one page instead of having to do each one individually.

In the meantime, I have started going through the process of going to every photo and using the "Adjust Thumbnail" tool. It is very time consuming. I just finished an important gallery (currently it's private, but it is for work and needs to go public soon). I then added a watermark, and lo and behold, it reverted all the tumbs to the original square crop! :doh

Do I really have to go back to each photo and do it again? If I change the watermark, is this going to be a recurring problem!? I assume the answer to both is yes at the moment, but I needed to check.

I know that square thumbs are a high priority right now, so I really hope this very aggravating hiccup is being considered.

Help?

thanks,
Adam

If you are a Power User or Pro, then there is a Bulk Thumbnail Hack that you can use.

But, you are correct, every time you change your watermarks, you will have to regenerate your thumbnails...

Thanks, guys. I'll try that now. I do hope Smugmug makes this native, however. I think it's incredibly important.

Just thought I'd bump this to see if there have been any developments.

If I watermark a photo my crop of the thumbnail reverts back to the original. Seems like something that shouldn't happen.

    Bump.

Oh, did I just find this "issue" with the thumbnails in a big way. I have about 10 hours of thumbnail cropping on over 500 photos to now re do. I am Not. Happy.

Please, SM, if watermarks don't affect thumbnails, please don't destroy my work.

If I have watermarks set NOT to apply to thumbnails, there is no good reason thumbnails should be destroyed just when I change the watermark.

Should this be filed somewhere as a bug or feature request? (I'd like a feature where this bug doesn't occur. :) )

I wish we had a way to not regenerate thumbnails, I'm sorry - anytime you do something to an image, watermarking, or rotating, or similar things, the thumbnail will regenerate. You can add your voice here, sure! http://feedback.smugmug.com

In principle, it's not too difficult. Just save the 4 corners of the thumbnail crop in the photo data file, and regenerate the thumbnail using that data after the watermark has been applied.

Wow, this is a real problem for those using the square thumbs. I'm glad I never switched from the classic ones.

    Ditto.

It's just too bad that square thumbs became the default setting, now I have to remember to switch it before uploading images to a new album.

I use a quick setting when I set up new galleries, and my quick setting is set to original thumbs (it has other defaults specified as well).

See http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-storage, section titled Make a quick setting now to save time later.

I do the same thing Denise does. I also have a default watermark set in this quick setting since watermarking upon upload is waaaay quicker than applying it to an existing gallery.

Could you explain this in more detail? This thumbnail-watermark thing drives me nuts at times, and I do not understand why, if we're not even watermarking thumbs, it should affect them. But anyway, are you talking about something Smug needs to do internally, or is this something individuals can do?

Something Smugmug could/should do in their internal implementation - nothing you can do. This is a pretty heinous omission in the rewatermarking implementation because it potentially throws away hours of painstaking work by the site owner just because you decided to update your watermark. That's what we would call a "data loss" issue and that would usually garner a pretty high fix priority in my years in the software business.
