Salamander ID needed

Hello,

Found this salamander - sorry I don't have a better photo.

Location Southern Vermont- under a log.

    That is a Red-Backed Salamander.
    Size is average of 2 1/2 to 5in.

    They are common here in Upstate NY as well.
    When handled wrong their tail breaks off.
    I assume it's to get away from predators.

    That is a Red-Backed Salamander.
    Size is average of 2 1/2 to 5in.

    They are common here in Upstate NY as well.
    When handled wrong their tail breaks off.
    I assume it's to get away from predators.


    Thank you for the quick response. The few pics I saw of the Red-backed when I was trying to ID, the red was small and narrow but I wondered if there was variation- the color was so close.

    Not a problem.
    I have studied about all North American Wildlife since I was 10yrs old....so that's around 30yrs. rolleyes1.gif

    My guide shows 2 variants....Red backed and Lead backed form.
