#s 1 and 3 are soft but you did get the required bb of the gbh. #2, that's really nice, much sharper and clearer than many you've posted it's a little underexposed... but you can fix that in ps.
The second shot is very good and with Andy about #1 and #3.
You really are showing improvement.

Steve thanks for the encouraging words I will get it if it takes 20 more classes thank G-- for the delete button Thanks for your looking and commenting Jeff
I just have to ask since I shoot birds: why are birds 1 and 3 soft. Why is there a "soft" problem in general? Jeff, you mentioned that you had a problem with that.
What has Andy said to do about it?
When I get soft, it is usually a shutter speed/ISO problem. In other words I am constantly screwing up on my settings. What other advice is being given?
Yes, I do have a monopod. It saved my life during a baptism yesterday when the on camera flash wouldn't pop up and I hadn't brought my other one, a different story. But I do know alot of my soft is blamed on lack of monopod support..........I now have one.
What other things re soft have been said? Jeff, so I can learn, too, why do you have a problem with soft?
On the PS thing, if you have CS, use the shadow/highlight tool for the darker color on the other birds. Also saturation w the lightness control. If I am desperate I go to levels. Just some easy thoughts. The only one you need CS for is the shadow/highlights......

Could be lots of things. #1 doesn't seem to have anything in the frame in focus. So it could be camera shake, panning technique problems, or mashing of the release, which can cause a pic to be taken even though the AF hasn't locked on. Low shutter speeds could also have added to the problem.
What has Andy said to do about it?
I don't know if he said anything.

Ginger, it's so hard to get good BIF's and even harder to write down a step by step guide, since every shot is somewhat unique. I think the biggest issue with BIF's is panning technique. Getting comfy with tracking birds and keeping the focus point on them while shooting. Also, knowing how to slow the pan when they are landing. So you don't continue to pan at the same speed when they slow down, or so you don't keep panning as they stop.

Camera shake is a big issue. especially with longer focal lengths. It doesn't take much shake at 600mm+ FOV to cause softness.

You can usually tell by looking at the pic what could have caused the softness. As I mentioned about shot #1, nothing is in focus. That's a real clear sign that either there was camera shake going on, or that you didn't wait for the AF lock before firing.

I agree about the Shadow/Highlight adjustment. It works great, but it does result in less contrast. So you have to use it sparingly or you'll wind up with a "flat" image.
