Commercial Use Contact?

I photographed a rather big horse show last weekend... the biggest event I've done. Now I am being bombarded by people wanting to publish images, use them for advertising, buy digital files, etc, etc. To be honest I hadn't expected THIS much attention from photographing this event... not that Im complaining... I'm just a tad unprepared to handle it at the moment since it caught me off-guard.

I've never sold anything for commercial use before so I do not know much about this. I would like to have some kind of contract to have these people fill out... if only if it makes me feel more protected. Anyone here have any contracts I can take a look at or use?? Any advice here??

I plan on having 3 choices for them to choose from:
1 year use - $250
2 years use - $350
Unlimited use - $450

Am I selling myself short or do these rates seem fair?? Too high?? Of course credit must be given with any published material as well....

Look into FotoQuote. It should help with the pricing (depending on the use, those prices might actually be quite low).

Yes, those prices are low. Make sure you specify usage correctly once you come to a price. UsePlus is a great 'usage' resource.

Hey there, congrats on the popular response from clients. Answers to the questions you pose are all over this forum.

You can use the SEARCH feature for "Pricing Photography" or please look at the top of the MYOB forum for a sticky titled... "Photogs Resources" There's a thread there about pricing images.

    Good luck thumb.gif

Well they are going to be using more than one image of mine... so I can consider it a multiple purchase discount of sorts with the prices (I already had talked to them before posting here about this). I can tell people something higher if anyone else asks about using the images.

I had gotten my prices from looking at the photographer who NORMALLY covers the event that I shot... and he tends to be a bit pricey so I sent mine a little lower than his are... maybe he was just dead-on with advertising prices though... people have complained about him being pricey in the past and I want to take over his gig on the event I shot (since he normally does it and I got it this year). I just hadn't thought that shooting this event would turn into commercial use of images like this.

Normally I just shoot the event and people buy their pics online.... I've never had magazines and organizations asking me to use my pictures like this.... so I was caught off-guard. It's not a bad thing... it just has me running around trying to sound like I have it all figured out (selling rights to use images etc) when I dont... lol. I won't complain about the extra $$$ though! :) Thanks for the link! I will feel better having some kind of a contract with the sale to make things more solid and official sounding. (and give me peace of mind).

I think those rates are very reasonable. Setting them too high will open you up for competition. If they are breeders they will come back to you year after year. You dun gud! clap.gif

Well it's actually a college that is buying them... but I am not sure if it's the actual college or the team (which doesn't always get $$ from the college to use for stuff like this....it's not like the football and other teams that are run off school funds). But it will be good publicity too bc they will need to give me credit for the photos. I want to be able to shoot more events for them in the future so I want them to have a good experience working with me. From what was implied to me... they will be buying the unlimited use of the images... so that will be a nice chunk of change if they buy more than one. They will most likely be using them to run ads advertising their team in magazines and other print material to get future recrutes on the team.

Here are the pics I shot if anyone wants to check them out:
