Wonderful diversity Brian. The ant farm is super.

Can you tell me the setup again you use for your pics (here) and maybe tell me why my 400D & Sigma 105 doesn't get this close and clear???

    Regards & thanks.

    Paul.

Thanks for the comments Paul :)

Paul - think these were all taken with my MPE-65 many above 2:1 magnification. #3,#6 and #7 could be taken with my sigma 105- (less than 2:1)- I routinely use 33mm of ext tubes on my sigma to give me a max of 1.5:1. Around this magnification many of the finer details on bugs become visible.
Lots of info on my setups here http://www.flickr.com/groups/topic/66514/

I also tend to shoot with fairly open apertures (for macro anyway) normally not smaller than F11 at 1:1 and say F8 at 2:1 to prevent diffraction softening at the expense of some DOF loss which I often get back from focus stacking.

    Wonderful series.

Excellent detail in the fly images and the pattern and colour on the plant bug is awesome.

I've yet to see 'ant farming' for myself and can't wait for my first sighting. This is a great image.

The spiderling bundle is also very good :D, just a shame about the OOF spider in the foreground.

I've been toying with the idea of extension tubes but wanted to get good at 1:1 before spending more money :) But I do crave detail, so may order them soon.

Thanks for the detailed comments Rod- much appreciated :)

Agree with the ext tubes. Much better to get used to and feel limited by the magnification before taking steps to increase it, but there is a wonderful world of more detail around 1.5:1 or higher :)

Outstanding Brian. I don't believe I've ever seen a pregnant fly. Makes one want to think twice before reaching for the swatter! :D
