control panel very slow to load--and sometimes fails

I frequently need to wait quite a long while for my control panel to load--much more than any other page. (And this morning can't get it to load at all.)

Is there something I can do differently, or is it just a matter of waiting until the database isn't so busy?

    Ouch, sorry you're seeing this. We have been having some performance issues in the last few days, especially today. We're completely focused on it.

    I'm not looking at server logs like the engineers are, but I have a hunch: we introduced a new full screen slideshow that has become enormously popular, sales and traffic are on fire, and the spike in traffic exceeded our planning.

    Hopefully we'll get ahead of it quickly.
