Question on bulk gallery settings & squarethumbs

If I have a bunch of galleries which are (currently) set to 'Original' and I create a new quick setting that has the thumbnails set to 'Square' and apply that quicksetting to a bunch of galleries.... Will SM's servers square the thumbnails en masse? Or, does it only affect the photos moving forward..?

I know if I change it gallery by gallery it changes it automagically. Just wanting to know about the logic in the bulk gallery settings.
