I am thinking of having my kids pass this flyer around the neighborhood to any family that has kids. Obviously, it it will be cut in two.

Any input on this idea welcome

While this may not be too P.C. - I think you should use an example portrait with a full family - mother, father, 2+ kids, maybe dog. While every family is different, it seemed odd to advertise family portraits with only a mom and kid.

i think a mother with child would motivate single parents to get a portrait

You might try a collage of images, (Mom and child, Dad and child, kids and pets, etc) to show what you offer.

    Good points all.

sadly, this is the delemma of getting started. This is the best "family photo" I have. I have some others of bigger groups, but I didn't think (and my wife agreed) they were as good as this. I am not sure about the collage. I am printing thes on half-sheet pieces of paper and am concerned that they might get small. And, as I say, I don't have a lot od depth yet.

Maybe it's worth getting a friend and his/her family to pose for free. Possibly even doing a few of these. When someone comes in for portraits, I imagine they will want to see samples. Doing it for free with friends will allow you to take your time and not feel the same pressure that you might if you were being paid.

This is the route I'm going. After being away from photography for a while, I realized I needed to update my portfolio. I found a co-worker whose engagement shots I did for very little, and am doing the reception for her wedding tomorrow for free. I also photographed a mother and child for free because I knew them and that the dad was serving in the middle east and would appreciate the photos.

This way I get to update my portfolio, and get "my name out there". And, like the previous poster mentioned, there is less pressure.

I am doing this myself. I am creating a graphic design to make one. I am trying my best to make it look nice.

But what about, using a tryptic? But that may not allow you to do a double and then cut.

I would probably like to see the text centered and the second sentence needs to have a question mark. Great idea, be sure and let us know how it works out :D

I am reading a book that suggested when you are getting started, do everything you can to get your first 100 customers. After that, he said, if you are any good, word of mouth will take care of you.

Following that advice, my next version of this is to drop the sitting fee and post reasonable prices for prints. Nice thing is, I am printing 50 copies at a time and testing results. Oh, the next version also has some "limited time only" language.

I think it needs work and I'm not crazy about the image. I like the drop shadow on the pic and the simple white background, but the image, the layout of the text, and emphasis just doesn't flow properly.
Even if it's just marketed for your neighborhood I had to force myself to read past "Family portraits are forever" because that is the only text you have made important.
    How about "Portraits Are Forever"
And a quick list of the types of portraits you can do

Good idea. I like it. I love this place. What's not to like--you chose a photo of my daughter!
