Can you random shuffle images in a gallery?

Hi,

I wonder if it is possible to random shuffle the images in a gallery? It seems that all we can so is just sorting them into certain orders (by time, by filenames, by caption...) and not shuffling them around?

(I know can move them around one by one by myself in the arrange mode, but that's too troublesome.)

Thanks.

You're right, you can't randomly arrange photos in a gallery. But it is possible to grab a random image from a gallery. See http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/Random+Photos+Code. I use that code to grab a random image for my header, and to grab the random images for my Gallery page and categories pages.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish?

    I see.

Basically I am playing around with the Flash Show (http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/Flash+Slideshow).

I created a gallery containing the pics I want to throw to the flash show player. Right now it seems that player doesn't support playing your images in real random order. So it actually looks a little boring when I have a series of pictures taken around the same place around the same time being played.

So I was thinking maybe I can just random shuffle the images in that gallery offline. But it looks like the possible way I found so far is to arrange them piece by piece manually.

    Sebastian

Thanks for sending me your note. I am new with SmugMug and I LOVE it !!.

My SmugMug Home Page is http://marvboater.smugmug.com/ ..

My goal is to have a Header similar to Andy's ( http://dgrin.smugmug.com/ / http://www.dgrin.com/ ) with the six random photo boxes ..

I know that I have a learning curve so I started by adding a Header with one jpg file. I use Front Page to develop Websites so I know a little about 'codes' etc.

    Again thanks much !! ..

Any updates on random shuffle in a gallery?
Has this feature been implemented yet? It would sure be nice to have a random shuffle to create slide shows that are not in some ordered sequence like time, date, file number, etc. It is really time consuming to drag each photo to different location in a gallery, especially if you have a couple hundred photos. I use animoto occationalyy and they have a shuffle feature that makes it a breeze. Thanks for your feedback... Cheers!

You are using the built-in Smugmug slideshow on your homepage and if you go to the settings box for that slideshow, there is a "random" option.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I am aware of that option and that is exactly what I would like to do when I forward a slideshow link from a gallery. Right now it plays the slideshow in the order the photos are in in the gallery. So if I want a random slideshow from the gallery, I have to arrange the photos first. This is the step that could use a "Random" arrange so I do not have to manually "Drag" 200 photos to mix them up. Make sense?

I'm not aware of any way to randomize a slideshow link unless you make a page with a custom slideshow on it that is set for random order and send out that link.

OK... Thanks. I do think it would be a nice feature under the "Arrange" button to instantly be able to display any gallery's photos in a random order, no matter what type of style you are using to display that gallery. What do you think? :D

I personally haven't found a reason to randomize the order of a gallery, but that's just my own opinion for my own use.

You can file feature requests for Smugmug here: http://feedback.smugmug.com/forums/17723-smugmug if you want it to be "officially" considered.

What if a viewer of your galleries is trying to locate a photo that he or she knows that they saw on the 2nd page of a 10-page gallery before? I think displaying a galleries photos in random order is quite unfriendly to your site's viewers. What are are trying to accomplish here?

They are trying to send out a slideshow link that shows the images in random order (so it's different every time).

Actually, we just need to random shuffle the gallery once (it does not have to be different every time). We generally take 1,000+ shots at our events and put those in order so people can locate there shots in the gallery.
In addition to that, we like to create a separate unlisted gallery with about 200 of the best shots... we then share the slideshow link of this "Highlight" gallery to hosts, sponsors, and social networks. These highlight galleries tend to have 3 or 4 similar shots from the same group in them and we find that the slideshow plays better when these similar images are not back to back (as they would be if you do not shuffle them around).
This may seem like a very unique circumstance but when creating slide shows there are often times when a quick random shuffle makes for a less predictable, more exciting show! (I believe that is why our friends over at Animoto include the random option in their sort toolbar). Just seems like it would be a nice option to have... Thanks! thumb.gif

Then, just create a custom slideshow (which does allow for random order) instead of using the built-in slideshow.
