I just ordered the Canon SD870IS for my wife for mother's day (ssshhhhhh)....for $260. It got me thinking about our first digicam, the Nikon Coolpix 990.

Nikon Coolpix 990 ::: Canon SD870IS

$750 and a state of the art camera ::: $259 and last years model already value priced

3.3mp ::: 8mp

ISO 400 ::: ISO 1600

No movie mode ::: Movie mode

Shutter lag is frustrating ::: No shutter lag to speak of

1.8" lcd ::: 3" lcd

Best I can get for under $1000, slr's are prohibitively expensive ::: I can get good 8-10mp DSLR for same price as the Coolpix from several manufacturers

Bought it because it was the best I could get. ::: Bought it because my wife wants a small digi cam that will fit in a purse or pocket. Meanwhile I shoot with a 12.7mp full frame DSLR and a 10m 6.6fps DSLR

Home prints fade ::: Home prints last 100 yrs, but I can get lab prints at Costco (and numerous other places) and dozens of places on the net.

Film is the standard and people are still wondering if digital will ever be good enough. ::: Digital is the standard, few film cameras are even made anymore.

Times sure have changed in the last 7 years. Imagine what's coming in the next 7.
