build your own light stands?

How many people in here build their own light stands and such? I'm very much into wood working and making things so I'd thought maybe I could get away with making my own flash/umbrella stand for cheaper than one would cost elsewhere.

anyone have any experience doing this? and not just light stands - anything photography related?

For something like a light stand I wouldn't look at the DIY path. Too much risk of both equipment damage and personal injury there for me.
