Nice, now a little Moderation (Help) could get them all in one place in the OP.

Nice series, regardless. I am very envious of the opportunity to do such images!

Thanks. There's not a lot to envy about working on the NorthSlope in the winter, but the Northern Lights are one nice bene.

Regarding the posting, I finally got it figured out which part of the URL to post so that the image is displayed but does not provide a link to my web album. (using Picasa not Smugmug)

It's not the opportunity that I'm envious of, it's the fortitude ! eek7.gif It's usually darn cold when those things are showing.

    Fantastic shots!
I've never been able to see the lights. Can you tell me more about seeing them and how you meter for those kinds of shots? I'd love to hear more thumb.gif

    Just trial and error.
    I'm using an Canon 40D with an EF-S 17-55 2.8.
I set it at 2.8, adjust the ISO between 400-1000, and shutter between 15-25 seconds.

There are two websites I use to schedule shoots. One is a forecast based on solar activity and another is an actual condition page based on satellite data.
Based on that info you just have to decide if it's worth committing yourself to a couple hours in the freezer.
Seems to me that the most active displays are around midnight, -+ 1 hour.

I really appreciate all the compliments.
Re: the light on the mountains, I took these photos at Pump Station 4 on the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. The floodlights from the station cast that ambient light. It's not visible to the naked eye, but it's enough to show up in a long exposure.

    know you?
bladeflap...do I know you by another name? (I'm local...north pole...).

Nice shots! It's starting to get dark enough for some aurora to come through. I might be out to look for perseid (sp?) meteors the next few days. All depends on the rain and the weather. I blew off my normal trip to Denali this year cause of the rain. Just found this board....
