Hi guys,

Been awhile since I wrote. Anyway, I currently have www.heatherkphotography/smugmug as my domain name. I paid to have that masked through yahoo as www.heatherkphotography.com and that has worked fine. Now I have actually completely gotten away from my name and registered something completely different as my business name and I would like to know how I can go about updating this on smugmug. My site is paid for until at least September I believe. Can anyone give me some pointers? All this stuff is new to me. I wanna make sure I can set this up right before I change my header to the new name and also try to send people there.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Heather

Hello Heather. You really do not want to use domain masking with your SmugMug site. I am surprised that you have not had problems with it.

The proper way to do this is using a CNAME and A records in the Domain DNS settings. We have instructions here for that: http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/Yahoo+CNAME+Setup

If you have any problems, please feel free to contact me on the help desk. I will work with you to get things set up.

    Hi Doc,

I'm not sure domain masking is the correct term. I'm pretty sure I had it set up this way before but what I need to know is do I need to register a new domain name somewhere and then change the masking or whatever you call it and send my customers to the new name and they will no longer see www.heatherkphotography? Or do I first need to change it in smugmug (can I?) before I then do anything else. Does any of this make sense? It's confusing I know. Please let me know if I need to clarify any of this.

    Thanks,
    Heather

I think I understand what you are after. The only problem is that you can only have 1 domain pointed at your SmugMug site at a time. That is all we can support. However, there are ways to make more than one domain work. I can help you with that.

Due to frequent requests for multiple domains, I have put together a wiki page with some of my notes on it: http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/Multiple+Domains

The problem is going to be timing the switch to get your new domain in place without taking your old one down for too long. I would recommend getting the second domain. That way it is ready. Then when your are ready to make the switch, I can help you get things set up.

What we will do is set up everything on the new domain and point it to the site. Then we will point the old domain to the first. That will keep allow anyone that has the old domain to find the site, but new visitors will not see the old domain.

    Does that make sense?

Send me an email on the help desk when you are ready as I may need access to your domain hosting account if you have problems.

So to clarify what you are saying is I need to get another domain name (purchase it from somewhere) and once I have that then you can help me to get it to point to my current smugmug site and people will only see the new name? As well as people with my current name being able to still get to the site? This is tricky...lol
