Which to use on 70-200mm VR Lens in Yosemite- 1.4x or 1.7x converter

I will be going out to Yosemite next month with a rented 70-200mm VR lens. The pinnacle of sharpness. I'd like to extend the range a bit but do not want to loose much IQ. So I will not be using the TC-20EII converter.
How is the IQ when I use the 1.7x over the 1.4x converter. Do I loose a lot using 1.7?

Thoughts, opinions?

In Canon land, the 1.4 is the way to go. Somebody more familiar with Nikon
    can better answer this question.

Not sure where abouts you are headed. But the 70-200 would probably be
enough for most things (except maybe shooting climbers on El Cap from
    the meadow).
