custom hostname/domain name question

Ok, please forgive me now. I have no clue. :scratch

I want to do this new custom host name thingo. So I start by trying to find a name that I want. Obviously I want either 'headinthecloudsphotography.com' or 'headintheclouds.com' ... both have already been taken, but not currently being 'used' ... is there anything I can do about that? Does that mean I have no choice but to choose something else?

Or does someone just look through the smugmug sites that don't have domain names registered yet, grab them, and hope to make a quick buck when the person decides to try to register their business name? :dunno

If I can't get the name I want, I'm just going to stick with the .smugmug. thing that I've already got printed on everything anyway, so it is no skin off my nose ... just curious, because it would be pretty cool to just have my own .com. ...

Thanks in advance ... :thumb

If the name is taken you don't have much choice but to choose another name, or to try to purchase it from the current holder. And the name taken has nothing to do with smugmug sites and everything to do with folks registering names for their own current or future use or with the idea of selling the names.

I think I saw on one of your other posts that you're in Australia. Is that right? Because I just checked www.headinthecloudsphotography.com.au, and that one is still available.

that one would be great (the .au one) but it isn't an option via this new domain thingo that Smugmug is doing ... and I'm such a computer idiot that unless I have step by step instructions (as smugmug likes to give, thank god) I fall in a ditch and can't get back out ... rolleyes1.gif

I guess there must be someone like this "go daddy" place that does the .au domain names to ha? ...

You can buy your domain anywhere, but godaddy is the only registrar with the "built in" link to smugmug. But honestly, it's just not that hard to set up via other registrars. See http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts and http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/CNAME+Custom+Domain+Name+Help.

If you want to use godaddy, then you'll need to pick another name.

    headintheclouds is available as .net.au
I registered by domain name about 8 weeks ago, and found it was quite easy to adapt it to my Smugmug site - just follow the instructions.thumb.gif
My advice would be to find a domain name that is available and that you can live with, then grab it quick

edit: just visited your site and see it's a business, so I guess a .com or .com.au address would be more appropriate.

    Johnna,

I think you have that backwards maybe? You would want www.johnnabrynn.com and point it to SmugMug.

I can help you with this. Send me an email on the help desk. I can help you set this up: http://www.smugmug.com/help/emailreal
