I read about this in a post in the Yahoo controlled vocabulary group I belong to. David Riekes, the group admin and owner of controlledvocabulary.com, posted about it.

TinEye Beta

From David's Post:
TinEye is an image search engine that uses the Idee digital
fingerprinting technology, and with a similar functionality to
PicScout. However at this point in time, TinEye is free and in beta.
You simply enter an image location (on disk or via URL) to find out
where else that image is appearing on the web. It's in private beta
right now, but if you drop your name into the box there's a good
chance you may receive an invitation to create a free account as well.

Only a tiny fraction of the web is indexed so far & you may not find
any hits yet. As the index grows in a couple of weeks you may find
more matches.

In the post, he also discusses how he found a website in Kuwait that had used four of his pictures.

Interesting stuff.

Very interesting. I had always wondered when this sort of tracking may appear although i wasnt anywhere as accurate...i assumed it would be via meta data etc.

Wow, very cool! I received my invite less than hour after I signed up for the waiting list and my account is now setup (I love playing with new technology :D). I'm about to restart Firefox (I dl'ed the plug-in) and start testing it out. Since I'm aware of several sites where my photos are posted, it will be interesting to see the results and I'll post back how it goes.

Good timing on their part with all the brouhaha about Orphan Works. This kind of technology will be more important than ever.

I am worried about how much this service will cost once it comes out of beta. headscratch.gif None of idee's other products are priced (call to discuss), so I bet it's pretty pricey.

I learned about them in another group. Quite a few found their images.

I got my invite, couldn't find any of my images.

I'm not sure if that makes me happy or sad, Laughing.gif!

Couldn't find any of mine either - even the ones i know are posted elsewhere. I figured maybe the sites i had them posted on weren't indexed, so i sent the urls in on the suggestion page.

    Really neat service though.

Keep trying. They have lots of crawling to do yet.

Firefox tells me that the TinEye add-on is not compatible with the most current version of FF - 2.0.0.14. Are you guys using an older version of FF, or the beta version 3? Or using the on-line version? I don't want to upload images, that's why I was excited about the FF add-on.

And although the e-mail invitation specifically states they are looking for feedback (the whole point of a beta, right?), I can't find anyplace to contact or submit feedback, other than the form to submit a recommended website.

    Hi Lori,

I am using the most current version of FF (2.0.0.14) using the plugin and I am having no issues... ne_nau.gif

Not sure what is wrong... Any specific errors?

    Thanks,

    Lee

That's strange headscratch.gif. The add-on didn't load when I restarted FF, so I went into Tools > Add-ons, and the box for TinEye Image Search 0.4 says "Not compatible with Firefox 2.0.0.14"

Do you have the same version of TinEye? I'm wondering if possibly they recently upgraded their version?

I'll try uninstalling and redownloading the add-on.

    Thanks Lee.

Uninstalling and reinstalling worked, FF must've just had a little hiccup the first time. Thanks for confirming Lee.

Now I have to go learn how to disable right click protection so I can access the tool on sites with rcp (such as my own, hehe). Thought I had it figured out when I could bring up the right click menu on my own site, but found out smugmug was still only allowing access to spacer.gif and that trick didn't work on the World Press Photo site, so I need to find a more sophisticated way! Time to go surf the hacker sites. rolleyes1.gif

    Gosh I feel old...rolleyes1.gif

Very cool, although the database seems to be very Euro-centric right now.
Searching some of the World Press winners, and it's amazing how TinEye finds even the cropped versions in (sometimes less than) seconds:

But although I've figured out how to beat rcp on most sites (and it's scary how easy it was - makes you wonder why even bother), I'm still not smart enough to figure out how to beat that spacer.gif on my own smugmug site when I bypass rcp. yelrotflmao.gif

I came across this today, put my name in the hat for a beta account, and just got invited in. While the index is small, I'm impressed. It found a picture I'd put up on istock for a short period of time and sold a few copies, so that was neat. The Firefox plugin is nice, too. I don't have a large set of images that I know are off of smugmug (which doesn't seem to be indexed--I put in a suggestion!) to test with though.

Site needs some work...login and profile update pages are not encrypted, and only the search result page gives the feedback link (which launches an email, not a web form).

What I would really love is for them to monitor my smugmug (publicly accessible) pictures and let me see reports or alerts of where they show up on the web. I'd pay for that.

As time passes, it would also be cool if they could sort by date, so you could see where a photo first got put online. It would help you track down a photog if you like their work.

As an example, they have 54 results in their index for duplicates of this bucket theft diptych. http://icanhascheezburger.com/2007/01/14/i-has-a-bucket/
