Well my brother in laws had a high school alumni soccer game this week against an English team. So I was asked to come and take pictures. It is pretty much the first time I took a real stab at sports photography and the 1st photo did get in the local paper......Yippi......

1.) I was asked to do a group photo before the game. Most people would change lenses from the 70-200 to something a little more wide angle. NOT ME! It was in my bag way over there...... Its amazing how far I had to go back to get the shot. I thought I had left enough around the edges to get a good crop but when i got it home the crop was terrible. I had to add more astro turf to the bottom to get an 8 x 10 with everybody in it. So overall I am not very happy with it.......I also think i got a little lucky because I had the aperature at f4 and Everybody is mostly in focus....

For your group shot, you should crop what works best for the image, not paper size. In photoshop you can then change the canvas size to match 8X10. You will end up having a border around the picture, but the composition of the picture will look much better. The image below has a canvas size 14X11.

While you captured some good action, your could stand to have tighter crops. If the images will not allow for tighter crops, you need to focus in tighter when shooting the game.

Thanks!! That makes sense and I am not sure why i didnt think of that. I will give it a try and post it....

Pretty sure there is more room to crop on most of these. Just been busy....

    Thats a nice photo!!!

uncle john, i think you blew your assignment.

no hard feelings, if your local paper ran the team shot, maybe the editor needs lessons.

the Team shot is way 2 long, yes, you needed a wide angle, get close and see the faces. The setup is good, just to long.

Your soccer shots, need cropping or you need to shoot tighter, again, for these shots, you are just to far from the action, when nothing important like open space is the greater part of the image, you need to shoot tighter.

I am not being overly critical, just constructive. The old adage, shoot tight , crop tighter.

I have to agree with you. There is no other way around it, I blew it and I should have kept running for the wideangle lens. I started to but they were lined up and I didnt want to be the one holding up the starting of the game.....You live you learn......

    Thanks for the comments
